Holy Week 2010
Palm Sunday: March 28 Passion or Palm Sunday marks the beginning of Holy Week, the most solemn and intense period of worship in the Christian faith. On Palm Sunday we celebrate Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem which foretells the victory of his Resurrection and his return to earth in glory. The blessing and distribution of palms takes place on Palm Sunday at all of the regularly scheduled Masses at St. Justin's. There will be an additional Mass in Spanish in the Hall at 9:30 a.m.
Monday of Holy Week: March 29 On Monday of Holy Week the Diocese has a Chrism Mass at which the holy oils of the sick, the oil of the catechumens, and the sacred chrism oil is blessed. These oils are then taken back to each parish and are used throughout the year. All priests and parishioners of the Diocese are invited to attend the Chrism Mass at St. Columban's Catholic Church at 5:30 p.m.
Tuesday of Holy Week: March 30 Masses: 6:30 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. Confessions: 9:30 - 11:00 a.m.
Holy Thursday: April 1 The Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday celebrates Christ’s institution of the Eucharist and of the priesthood. During the Mass there is the rite of washing of the feet, just as Jesus washed the disciples’ feet. At the end of Mass the candles in the church are extinguished, the altar is stripped of any cloths or décor, and the Holy Eucharist is removed from the tabernacle. Good Friday: April 2 On Good Friday, we remember the ultimate sacrifice that Jesus made for us. It is also a day of fast and abstinence. The Assumption of the Virgin Mary: TBD Because she belonged to Christ, Mary, our queen, is raised on high, a great sign for all who believe in her Son.
All Saints Day: November 1 , Mass times TBD On this day, we rejoice in all the men and women blest in the eyes of the Lord, who celebrate the heavenly liturgy. They stand in God's holy place and sing of the love the Father has bestowed upon them.
Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed (All Souls): November 2 Mass times TBD All Souls Day is the commemoration of all the faithful departed, an annual day of prayer for the dead.
Thanksgiving Day: TBD The Mass time TBD is multi-lingual and features representatives from our various ethnic groups as readers, choirs, etc. This is a true celebration of our parish family, unity, and diversity. It is a special time we come together to worship and give thanks as one parish family. November is also a month of thanks. We collect food for the needy of our community on Thanksgiving Day at our Masses, which will be distributed by the St. Vincent de Paul Society.
Feast of the Immaculate Conception: TBD Holy Day of Obligation On this day we celebrate Mary, who was conceived without original sin. Because of Mary's obedience, God's salvation is made known to all. Masses: TBD

Simbang Gabi Masses: "Simbang gabi," meaning "going to church in the evening," is the traditional pre-Christmas novena of nine Masses in the Philippines. It shows the Filipino rite of celebrating life in more festive ways through prayers, music, Christmas images and symbols integrated in the nine days of liturgical celebrations. As is customary, after Mass the celebration continues with a variety of native meals shared by the worshipping community. Masses:

Mass for the Feast of Mary, Mother of God (a Holy Day, but not a day of obligation) Vigil Mass:
The Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God: January 1 On New Year's Day, the octave day of Christmas, the Church celebrates the Solemnity of the Holy Mother of God. As the New Year begins we commemorate the greatest of the Blessed Virgin Mary’s privileges, her divine motherhood. All other favors she received, including her Immaculate Conception, were bestowed on her in view of the fact that she was to become truly the Mother of God. January 1 is a Holy Day, but not a day of obligation for our Diocese. Masses: TBD
St. Justin School Open House: Date TBD All classrooms in grades Kindergarten through eight will be open for this day, in addition to the computer, music, science, art, library, and day care rooms. A varied selection of work from each of the students will be displayed.
Catholic Schools Week: Date TBD Special events are planned during this week celebrating Catholic Schools in our country.
Celebration of the Holy Infant Jesus (Santo Nino Fiesta): TBD The Filipino Community of St. Justin Martyr invites everyone to celebrate the Sto. Nino Fiesta, commemorating the Feast of the Holy Infant. The celebration includes a Mass, followed by a Rosary procession, "Sinulog," Entertainment Program and Luncheon.
Candlemas Day Candlemas Day, or the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord, is celebrated each year on the February 2, exactly forty days after Christmas. The candles that will be used in church are blessed this day. Parishioners may also bring candles and have them blessed at Mass this day. Masses: TBD
Feast of St. Blaise It is on this day that you may have your throats blessed at Masses. Blaise served as bishop of Armenia in the fourth century. Little is known about his life, but tradition tells us that St. Blaise saved a small boy from choking on a fish bone. Because of this, his help is sought for those who are sick, especially those who are afflicted with illnesses of the throat. On February 3, the Feast of Saint Blaise, the Church continues its ministry to the sick with the blessing of throats at Masses: TBD
Ash Wednesday Ashes are distributed during Masses on Ash Wednesday. The ashes imposed on our foreheads on this day are a reminder of our unworthiness and sinfulness. Ashes remind us of our original sin and our need of redemption. Ash Wednesday is a day of fast and abstinence. Ashes will be distributed during the Masses after the Gospel, not at Communion time and not after Mass. Mass times: TBD
